Frequently Asked Questions
Counselling shouldn't be a mystery and it can make it easier to know what you are getting into beforehand. Here are the most frequent questions we get and their answers. If you can't find what you are looking for feel free to reach out. We are always happy to try and get you the answers you need.
What is Counselling?
This is a bigger question than can be fully answered here, but we will do our best. Counselling, often using "talk therapies," seeks to encourage growth, change, problem solving, healthy crisis navigation, and increasing wellness for clients. There are many therapeutic modalities, and Hope Springs Counselling Services tries to tailor our approach to the uniqueness of each client, be strengths based, and be trauma informed.
How do I know if I need counselling?
While we may be biased, we would argue that most people would benefit from counselling at some point in their lives. Anyone who is experiencing distress, is navigating difficulties, or would just like to see some improvements in their relationships or wellbeing can benefit. The more relevant question is usually "are we the right counselling option for you?"
Hope Springs Counselling Services sees individuals (aged 12+) or couples, but we specialize in trauma, anxiety and rural mental health services. Read about our services or the counsellors bio to see if Hope Springs Counselling Services is a good fit for you. We also offer free 15 minute consultations if you want to talk to the counsellor directly to get a sense of who we are.
Do we do direct deposit or are we covered by insurance?
Unfortunately, we are not able to offer direct deposit. Each organization that may offer you coverage has different, constantly changing requirements that make it hard to offer this for many counsellors. Your insurance or coverage provider may cover counselling services, but this would depend on your specific policy and you will have to check with them. As a Certified Canadian Counsellor, many providers acknowledge my services, but this is not guaranteed.
Do we offer evening or weekend appointments?
We understand. You may have commitments during the "work day" hours and need to book outside of this time. There are a few evening appointments in our availability, but they fill up quickly. Because we share the building with Stettler Community Church, we are unable to offer weekend appointments. If you cannot find a time that fits your schedule, you can reach out to our counsellors to see if there is another time, but this will dependent on availability.
What is our cancellation policy?
If you are unable to make your appointment, you can cancel without penalty up to 24 hours before your session. If you cancel later than that there is a $100 cancellation fee, unless you experience an emergency or health crisis.
Do you see children?
No. This is actually a good thing. Children under the age of 12 have different needs and you want someone who has the training and experience to give your child the best care. If you are having trouble finding a counsellor for your child, we may be able to give you more information about your options.
Do I have to be a Christian to get counselling here?
Not at all! Our counsellor is Christian and is happy to include faith-based principles in sessions if that’s something you want. However, there’s no expectation for you to share the same beliefs. Everyone is welcome here, no matter your background or faith.
How long does counselling take?
That really depends on you and what brings you to counselling. We’ll move at your pace and follow your timeline.
Some concerns naturally take more time to work through, but on average, many people attend about 8–10 sessions. That said, you’re always welcome to request more or fewer sessions. We’ll do our best to tailor the process to your needs and what feels right for you.
How much will counselling cost?
A 50-minute session is $200. If that feels out of reach right now, please know that a sliding scale is available. The fee is based on your income and can be as low as $40 per session.
We’ll always agree on the cost before we begin, so there are no surprises. My goal is to make counselling as accessible as possible while being clear and upfront about fees.
How long is a session and how often will I have to commit to?
Each session lasts 50 minutes. This allows your counsellor dedicated time to complete any important behind-the-scenes work related to your care, while ensuring you have enough time in session to make meaningful progress toward your goals.
Ideally, sessions take place once per week, as meeting weekly helps build momentum and creates space for lasting change. However, we understand that life can be busy, and certain times of the year may make a weekly schedule difficult. Some flexibility is possible, though less frequent sessions may affect the pace of progress.
Our priority is to provide you with the best possible care. We will work with you to understand your unique circumstances and find a schedule that supports your needs.
What do I need to do or bring for my first appointment?
Before your first appointment, the most important step is to read and sign the informed consent form. This document outlines the rights and responsibilities of both clients and counsellors, helping ensure that everyone feels safe, informed, and protected. You’ll receive the form when you book your appointment online.
Other than that, just bring yourself at your scheduled time. If you arrive early, you may find the vestibule or front door locked. Please wait until closer to your appointment time, and we’ll let you in as soon as we can. This helps protect the privacy of both our clients and our staff.
